How User Generated Content Helps SEO
Top SEO Industry Highlights During My First Year at SEO.com
Hey! The Search Engine Optimization Hawaii will be giving you an update regarding to the top SEO industry. In this case, you can have an information and news which you can later used for your entrepreneurship.
This month I reached my official one year tenure as an employee of SEO.com. During the past year, there have been many notable and industry changing events, so much that I could go on for pages and pages. I have chosen 7 that have affected me and those around me. Included is a little flavor of what it is like working for a great SEO industry-leading company like SEO.com.
1. Google Plus
Launched in June of 2011, this is Google’s hand at a social networking site. Due to the fact that they do not have access to Facebook data nor the ability to crawl Facebook user profiles, it was time they created their own social network. With the launch of their network, first in beta, followed soon after by opening G+ to the public, they quickly went from 0 to hero and hit 50 million users in 88 days.
Some of the features within their network include: Circles, hangouts, messenger, ripples, stream, and instant upload for photos. I personally enjoy using Google+ and love the instant upload feature. Another thing I enjoy is being able to filter which content is in my stream based on categories I create and place people in.
Key takeaway: If you are not on Google+ yet, you are missing the boat!
2. Google + Business Pages
If your business is not on Google+ for business pages, then you are missing out on a huge opportunity to help your business establish credibility. In November, Google rolled out G+ business pages to allow businesses to give an identity to their local business or place, product or brand, company or institution. For an example of a G+ business page, look at SEO.com on Google Plus.
The Google+ business page you create for your business or for your client’s business is very similar to the concept of a Facebook page for your business. Similar to a Facebook user "liking" your page/brand, users can +1 your G+ page/brand. Social sharing and brand interaction has an effect on the personalized search results of everyone that you are friends with on the web. Ex: Facebook, Twitter, Google Friend Connect, etc.
Key takeaway: Get your business on G+. Link it to your website. Link it to your other social profiles on the web. Build your online identity in every way you can.
3. Google Panda Update
How can we begin to talk about the seo and search marketing industry without talking about the Panda Update? Google launched a new algorithm update, called the ‘Panda’ Update, named after engineer Navneet Panda. This heavily affected many sites that had low quality content.
This update seemed to focus more on an entire site and how the entire site ranks, versus individual pages or sections of the site. This update caused an uproar in the SEO community. Many SEOs were scrambling to help their clients recover from this unexpected blow.
Key takeaway: As the Google search algorithm continues to evolve, I feel it will continually move towards the overall user experience of a website and try to rank and sort websites based more heavily on user experience factors.
4. SEO.com Named #1 Top Search Marketing Agency by Website Magazine
Website Magazine published a post listing the Top 50 Search Marketing Agencies, and SEO.com came in at #1. While working here and serving clients, I have gained an appreciation for understanding a client niche, constantly testing for results, and being open to changing your ways and processes in order to compete in this competitive industry. Additionally, I am very impressed at the array of various SEM services that we are able to offer our clients.
Key takeaway: We work in a competitive industry. Spend the time to understand your client’s business, try to view the campaign through their eyes and their shoes once in awhile, and lastly continually adapt your processes to the changing landscape to stay out in front.
5. Pubcon Vegas 2011
Vegas, Baby, Vegas!!! Need I say more? This was my first time at Pubcon, which is the largest annual gathering of search and social media industry leaders in the world. Pubcon Vegas was such a fun experience, and I was flooded with practical and tactical information I can use to help my clients.
Some of the highlights for me included meeting some of the big dogs in the industry, including Tim Ash of SiteTuners, Tom Critchlow of Distilled, Matt Cutts of Google, and Arienne Holland of Raven Internet Marketing Tools. In addition to that, it was a blast hanging out with my fellow SEO.com associates and soaking in all of the expertise and theory from fellow search marketers and social media pioneers.
Key takeaway: Our industry is constantly changing, so always test theories and recognize the power of social search influence this coming year.
6. Google Freshness Update
Google found a way to make fresh content rank better for search terms. Although the rankings are not in chronological order of when the content was posted, the update is helping fresh content rank. This means good and bad news for us SEOs.
The good is that with positive content we can get relevant pages to rank quickly and get traffic which can equal revenue for our clients. The bad news is that, if there is any negative publicity about our clients, the news will rank quickly and if socially shared will ‘naturally’ stay in the top rankings for awhile.
Key takeaway: If your client has a blog, get them to blog! If they don’t have a blog, get them a blog! Get ‘fresh’ on the internet!
7. SEO.com Christmas Party
Wrapping up a phenomenal year of business and celebrating our successes and camaraderie as a company, we had our Casino Royale 007 Company Christmas Party. We were served prime rib and chicken cordon bleu followed by hours of fake money poker games. We were in a rented venue, and it was a night to remember. To end the night we had a raffle drawing and had prize giveaways including gift cards to Subway, Wal-Mart, Visa, Amazon, as well as an iPad 2, PS3, and a 42" flat screen TV.
Key takeaway: We had a great year and are all looking forward to a fantastic year in 2012!!

Facebook 101: Schools Offer Social Media Classes to the Next Generation of Marketers
Hello! The Search Engine Optimization Hawaii is giving you the news today regarding the social media classes to the next generation of Marketers? What will be your reaction? Is it good for those marketing students or bad because it brings additional stress? It is up to you on what will be your reactions to this article.

The views some high school and college students have of social media may be changing as they break this month for the holidays. Before Davis High School junior Breanna Barton took Jeff McCauley’s new social media marketing class, Facebook and YouTube were merely means for wasting time. Now Barton sees things a little differently.
“There’s so much more to [social media] than people think,” Barton said. “I didn’t really think you could market with them, but it’s amazing how much potential there is for it.”
Growth rates in social media marketing are expected to increase about 33 percent each year, from $400 million in 2010 to $2.3 billion in 2015, according to a forecast by BIA/Kelsey. Companies are no longer just dabbling in social media, but fully investing in it.
These developments are changing marketing curricula, both in high schools and colleges, McCauley said.
“I [do it] because it’s now and it’s happening,” he said. “Chances are these kids will be working a lot with social media in the future. I’m not trying to make good high school students; I’m trying to shape the next generation of marketing professionals.”
Jonah Berger, an assistant professor of marketing at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, said the school’s marketing program is also actively adjusting to the changes.
“The school as a whole is extremely interested in these issues and I think that points to the importance of it,” he said.
But Berger also said that social media is simply another weapon in the marketing arsenal.
“These are technologies, not strategies,” he said. “To be effective, you have to understand the motivations for people’s interactions on those pages.”
He said he focuses much of his teaching on how to understand people’s behavior in social media so his students can better target their audiences.
The change to social media marketing has been gradual until recently, according to Ash Buckles, president of SEO.com, a Utah-based search marketing company that offers social media to its clients.
“When companies execute a social media campaign well, communication is maximized and open,” he said. “Social media allows businesses to receive direct feedback as a listening platform as well as introduce new product ideas.”
Berger said the power of the word of mouth is unequaled by any other tool in the marketing field, and social media is but the online version of “spreading the word.”
“I believe we will continue to see a rapid shift in marketing strategy as recent graduates enter the workforce and bring their own insights on the technology they have grown up with,” Buckles said. “I am excited to see how they will revolutionize the industry.”

What is Original Content? [Video FAQ Series]
Google loves original content. Original content is something that you wrote that you did not pull from any other source. There are a number of places where good content can be added to a site. Some options include:
- Blog posts
- Reviews
- Content on site
- Text on pages of site
What kinds of content do not provide value?
Doorway pages are pages that are created specifically for the search engines in order to get rankings. Once the user has clicked through the search results, they are brought to a different page on the site.
Auto-generated content is content that has been created automatically and stuffed with keywords. This content is generally useless to readers and discounted by the search engines.
Content scraping, or taking content from another source and pasting it on your site, does not qualify as original content. Developing quality, user friendly content is the only way to achieve original content.
What is a Deep Link? [Video FAQ Series]
A deep link is when you link to a page on the site other than the site's home page. For example, Google.com is the homepage of Google. Linking to Google.com/trends would be a deep link. If you see text after a / on a website, like in the case of Google.com/trends, you are looking at a deep link. For more SEO tips, check out SEO.com's YouTube channel.

How User Generated Content Helps SEO
I'm talking about user-generated content, of course. This kind of content gives you something your competitors don't have. But that's not the only reason you should enlist the help of users and visitors to your site to add content. When visitors to your site leave comments in your forums or on your blog posts, they use their own terms for your products and services. This can help you tremendously with keyword research. User-generated content can provide other users with valuable information about your products and services. Sure, there's the classic case of new forum members asking question...
Creating Different Types of Viral Content
Not convinced that viral content can work magic for you? As Jordan Kasteler explains in a post on Search Engine Land, viral content builds links. When search engines see these links it sends three clear message about your site...[it] is active...is current...is invested in the needs of your audience, notes Kasteler. This is exactly the kind of site that search engines want to show their users. Large amounts of social shares indicate that a mass amount of people not only found what they were looking for on your site, but also liked your site enough to share it with others, Kasteler states. ...

Want to double your website traffic in 2012?
Want to double your website traffic in 2012?
Hey! The Search Engine Optimization Hawaii is posting this articles to help you increase your traffic in your website.
Cyber Monday shoppers spent a record $1.3 billion this year as the Monday after Thanksgiving crept up on Black Friday as one of the busiest shopping days of the year. With Christmas just around the corner and so much possible revenue crammed into a short time span, businesses are rushing to capture as many holiday customers as they can.
While sales at brick-and-mortar stores the day after Thanksgiving still dwarf Cyber Monday receipts, a website that is optimized for the search engines will not only drive Internet traffic, but also foot traffic into your physical business by showing potential customers your location and the products and services you provide.
Two webinars scheduled at SEO.com in December will help you start the New Year with a website that could rank on the first page of Google when people search for your industry online. The programs are the final two installments in our Learn to SEO Like a Pro webinar series.
“This webinar series is intended to equip businesses with confidence in their ability to successfully manage SEO campaigns, or at least understand the most important components they are made up of,” said Claye Stokes, director of search engine optimization at SEO.com.
On Dec. 8, our experts will discuss strategies for doubling website traffic in 2012. Using Google Analytics to increase sales will be the topic of the Dec. 22 webinar.
Both webinars are free and you can register today.
Here are some tips from past webinars in the series in case you missed the first three installments:
SEO’s True Value Revealed
The true value of search engine optimization is revealed through demographics research. To really excel, you need to know who looks at your site and why, how they come into your site (home page or a services page), whether they are a repeat customer or not, and whether they respond to any of your calls to action.
Analyzing Demographics
Once you know something about the demographics of visitors to your site, you can then start analyzing each demographic and the return on investment you’re getting from each client. Calculating the cost per lead (CPL) can be just as useful as calculating the ROI. When you know how much you are spending per customer action, you can take steps to reduce that cost and/or increase the volume of customers you attract.
Keyword Research
It is helpful to know what keywords attract given customers. Keyword tracking is not only possible from online leads, but also through phone call tracking, which determines what keyword in an Internet search led a customer to call your phone number.
With data on your target audiences and how they respond to leads, you are finally in a position to audit your search engine marketing efforts. You will want to determine some key performance indicators and use them as a baseline to see how your efforts progress over time. Some particularly useful segments to establish indicators for are new visitors, return visitors, conversions, and non-bounce visits.
Ranking Using Long-Tail Keywords
To rank high on your product or service pages, you need to choose the right keywords. Longer keyword phrases (called long-tail keywords) are much easier to rank for, and they also address specific customer needs better. However, long-tail keywords can be a little unwieldy in headings, so select the most important keywords from the long-tail phrase for your page title and then place the long-tail phrase in the opening paragraph of your page or post.
Present Your Value in Search Results
Make good use of the title tags and meta descriptions that search engines display on their results page. You will typically want it to give your product name followed by your company name. The meta description should include a clear value statement that essentially says, “This product (or service) solves your problem. It will provide you with real value. Click here to find out more about it.”
Convert Leads to Sales on Your Landing Page
When they click on your link you want to provide the product or service information and an easy way to purchase right from the landing page. A best practice is to put a call-to-action box or form in the top-right corner of the screen.
Although your text is primarily there for SEO, you need to make it easy for the viewer to read as well. You can make it scannable by using headers, bullets, white space, and some images. These will break up the flow to make it look more readable and less intimidating.
Get Your Landing Page Shared
Social media marketing is playing an increasingly important role in search engine rankings and product visibility. You need to provide your customers with a means to share your product with their friends. This is best done by providing “share this” buttons to each of the major social media tools available.
In an age when retail stores are gradually being replaced by online sales, these are crucial steps in maintaining your edge in the market.
Client Spotlight: Cleaning company is secret to others' success
It is likely you haven’t considered any behind-the-scenes efforts required to keep a company smooth sailing—which is where a firm like TEAM Solutions enters the picture. TEAM Solutions is an international technical cleaning and facility support service that is designed to optimize other companies’ performance.
TEAM Solutions has specialized in technical cleaning for nearly 30 years. Their facility-cleaning program meets the needs of several industries including aerospace and defense, automotive manufacturing, industrial cleaning, medical industry, food processing and a variety of other support services. Offering all these support services allows businesses to maintain focus on their core business activities.
TEAM Solutions works for major automotive manufacturers in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia, as well as food processing companies, beverage companies and aerospace and defense contractors. By keeping these facilities clean, each company is capable of operating efficiently.
“It’s all about helping our customers do what they do best in making their products as safe as they can be,” said Tom Rowland, the TEAM Solutions vice president of sales and marketing. “It’s about supporting the client so they can make the best things possible. Just as an example, we support the production of some of the best fighter jets.”
What sets TEAM Solutions apart from other facility cleaning programs is how they manage their operating system. TEAM Solutions drives operational excellence and ensures key performance at each of their sites.
“We do our job right for our clients to make sure they can focus on what they do best. Their food is safe, the cars look the best, and what we do helps them make everything better,” Rowland said.
Although some may not see any direct impact on their lives from a company like TEAM Solutions, be assured they play an indirect role in public safety. By keeping food processing facilities and the medical industry up to par with sanitation and cleanliness, TEAM Solutions in a way keeps the public in good hands.
“As an industry leader in technical cleaning facility management for a variety of industries, we touch on every aspect of people lives,” said Rowland.
Tips and Tricks: Title tags can be longer than 70 characters
Some may argue that title tags are the most important SEO tags for a website. Although most people are no stranger to the significance of a title tag for search engine optimization, there are those who could benefit from carefully crafting the right tag.
Title tags are a line of text normally found at the top of a browser window. Search engine spiders utilize title tags as a main source for understanding the topic of a page. The spiders crawl the site and determine the relevance between a title tag and the rest of the content. For this reason, using your keywords in the page title can help improve your rankings.
The length of a title tag to be displayed ranges from 60 to 70 characters for most search engines. If you use more than 70 characters, the title will be cut off on the search results page. However, even though search engines display 70 characters of a title tag, that doesn't mean they don't index titles longer than 70 characters. If you feel your unique title is limited, you can use more characters to ensure your critical keywords and phrases are included.
Utilizing title tags often helps generate quick and significant improvements for your search engine rankings. Feel free to push the boundaries of the 70 character “limit” for your title tag in order to provide the information you need for a boost.
