Quantifying Your Website's True Impact on Your Business

How would you handle your website or business? Want to gain some knowledge and ideas? This article will be sharing you the answer to the questions which brought to you by the Search Engine Optimization Hawaii.

Company owners and other business decision makers who handle a web marketing budget are given, whether it's their fault or not, too much website data that doesn't directly relate to an impact on the bottom line. What's wrong with this?  Only looking at visits and pageviews gives an incomplete story of how a site is truly performing for its customers and the company.  So, when it's time to decide how to invest, there's nothing concrete that gives confidence in where to put money.  To combat this problem, there needs to be a fundamental mindset shift to focusing on outcomes.

Step One: What's the Point?

The first step in this shift needs to involve laying out the ultimate reason the website exists, along with the micro-actions that signify the movement of a prospect toward that outcome (stick with 3-5 so you don't lose focus).  They could be purchases or certain behaviors.  Whatever these actions are, they are the ones that tell you if your site is successfully accomplishing its business purpose.

Purpose Questions.png

If you lay these out correctly, they will mostly be outcomes that can be given an economic value.  But, be careful not to focus on just e-commerce metrics like Conversion Rate. Why? People come to your site to do activities other than just purchase something.  They research, they look for jobs, they get support, read some content, etc.  They don't need to buy something for it to be a quality visit and for you to conclude that your website did it's job. Your website did it's job if visitors were able to complete the task they came to your website to perform.

Here are some valuable metrics other than conversion rate that focus on behaviors that, if improved, directly impact the bottom line...

  1. Cart and Checkout Abandonment - This shows the people who commit to buying a product on your site and then bail.  Find out where and why people don't start the checkout process after adding to their cart and don't finish the checkout process after they start. This puts more money directly into your pocket.
  2. Free PDF Downloads - If you have a B2B site, you most likely have a longer sales cycle, and visitors to your site might typically do a lot of research before deciding to purchase. If they come to your site and consume a PDF of the information that leads to conversions, this is success.  It should be measured.
  3. Visitor Loyalty and Recency - This metrics distributes visitors in a chosen time period based upon the number of times they have visited a site and the time period between visits. If you have a content site that makes money based on page views, then improving this will directly affect your bottom line.
  4. Average Order Value - If you improve conversion rate, but your average order value is less, then you may end up with less revenue.
  5. Primary Purpose (Identify the Convertible) - Again, not all of your visitors come to your site to buy.  So, to get a true picture of how your website performs, you need to know why they come and if their purpose is satisfied.  This gives you a better picture of how your website is doing.

The challenge for you is to decide on metrics that are most important for your company to improve that will directly impact your bottom line. They are different for every business and site, so make sure you really think and consider the critical few that are most important so that you can have laser focus.

Step Two: What's It Worth?

Now that you know what metrics will tell the story of whether your website is doing it's job or not, you need to make sure that the outcomes are given economic value. If you don't, you won't be able to communicate what improving a metric will do for the business. If business owners and executives are going to disperse resources, they need to know how the efforts to improve visitor loyalty or support tickets submitted is going to affect the business in dollars and cents. If the outcomes that occur on your site are not credited with economic value, you can't do this.

Even if the behavior is not an e-commerce transaction, give it value if it increases revenue or reduces cost for the business.  I might have 10,000 e-mail subscribers and they brought $100K in revenue last year to the company.  So, each subscriber is worth $10.  Some calculations may be more complicated, so get help from offline people and data if you need to.  Then, make sure you track what happens in the online channel to the best of your ability to be able to adjust for more accuracy going forward.

After you've started measuring what's important and seeing how much it's worth, you can then start analyzing this essential and extremely valuable data.  You can segment your data and look at visitors who only completed a certain action and see where they came from, what keywords they used, other common behavior they exhibit, etc.  This is where the gold is!

3 Keys to Making a Good First Impression With Your Website

The SEO Hawaii is sharing your this great information to read on because this will greatly help your website to build trust and to generate traffic.

In a recent post by Ron Ashkenas and Holly Newman on The Harvard Business Review Blog Network, they discussed 3 ways that Super Bowl advertisers try to make the most of their very expensive 30 second spots by making a good impression.

Not only does this apply to commercials and conversations, the same principles can also be applied to your business’s website.  Your website is often the first impression that potential customers have of you, are you making the most of it?

1.  Capture your audience’s attention

Advertisers regularly draw you in with “humor, aesthetics, emotions and surprise”.  How does your website capture your audience’s attention?

Imagery
In the chaos that often comes with a new site design, it’s easy to jump straight to boring stock images.  Make your site stand out from the others by putting some thought into your website’s imagery; it’s often the very first thing that a visitor focuses on when they load your site.

Content
You can also capture a visitor’s attention by creating addicting content that draws them in.  It starts with a catchy headline and useful information in a presentable format.  Make sure to use charts, graphs, bulleted lists and other styling to break up paragraphs.

Example of a Catchy Website

2.  Convey a clear message

The HBR blog post states “too much information can cloud an individual’s ability to accurately analyze a situation, and how “in good decision making, frugality matters.”.  Does the content on your site convey a clear and simple message?

Content Overload
As an expert in your field, it’s easy to inadvertently go overboard with detail and jargon. While it’s important to create SEO-friendly, keyword-rich content, you must also take into consideration the user experience.  All of the search engine traffic in the world won’t make a difference if your visitors are overwhelmed with your content.

Positioning
To slightly edit the question from the article – what is the most critical takeaway you would like your website visitors to receive?  Whatever your messaging or positioning is, make it very clear and state it often.

3.  Focus on differentiation

Depending on your industry, it’s very possible that a potential customer will visit 2-3 of your competitors.  This is especially true for eCommerce and other high-ticket purchases.  How does your website differentiate your business from your competitors?

You can differentiate your business by conveying a clear message and capturing your audience’s attention but to take it a step further, look at your biggest competitors’ websites and put yourselves in the shoes of a customer.  What can you add or modify on your website to really stand out?

Take a minute to review one of the most memorable quotes from the HBR blog post:

“Our world is filled with noise, information, and distractions; so having someone’s undivided attention — even for 30 seconds — is an opportunity that shouldn’t be wasted. If you can use those 30 seconds to capture their attention, deliver your message, and distinguish yourself from others, you’re likely to be heard, understood, and remembered.”

Much like a Super Bowl commercial, you only have a short period of a time with a website visitor to capture their attention, convey your message and differentiate your business before they hit the back button to click on the next search result.  Make the most of your website traffic by doing a self-assessment of these 3 keys and make your site stand out from the crowd.

Are You Held Accountable for Your Website Decisions?

This aritcle is simply talks about how you should decide on your website. Whether is it right to decide nor not to decide. SEO hawaii is basically one of those who have difficulty undergoing those needs for the website. Of course, we might say "yes", we have difficulty making decisions because we are trying to balance those decisions which have a greater impact and value on ours.

For far too long our online efforts have accurately been classified as faith-based initiatives...that's exactly how we made decisions for our offline efforts, and when we moved online, we duplicated those practices.  But online, in the glorious beautiful world of the Web, we do not have to rely on faith...you have a God-given right to be data-driven...to understand the impact and economic value of your website by doing rigorous outcomes analysis...web analytics is like Angelina Jolie; sexy, powerful, and a force for good.

Highest Paid vs. Data

In a typical business, the highest paid person's opinion usually wins.  This does not mean that their opinion is always the most informed though.  It's just the most powerful.  The problem is that it is also the least accountable.  But, in the world of the Web, there's a new sheriff in town.  Data.  This is because data (when used correctly) can provide accountability for decisions made.

It gives us a basis for determining if a decision is working or not.  Previously, if the highest paid person thought the billboard should be a certain color, there was no way to tell if that was the right choice or not.  Now, when the highest paid person believes that a button on a site should be changed, he can be held accountable for that belief.  Either the change gets better results or it doesn't.  Do you see how this changes the whole game?

When it comes to something as important as marketing your business, why would you rely on your opinion when you can swim in facts? Allow the facts to show you what to do rather than take shots in the dark.  We've moved into a time where data and (more importantly) the people who turn data into changes that make more profit should be higher paid people.

Memorize and Make Use of Keyboard Shortcuts Shortcuts are a great way to increase efficiency and save time. For example, you can hit Tab and Return to finish a comment, hit Q to jump to the chat feature, hit K to scroll up a post, and much more. Use Drag and Drop to Save Time You may be used to programs that require you to upload files using a clunky interface. Luckily, Google+ is no such program. Want to double your website traffic in 2012?

Want to double your website traffic in 2012?

Hey! The Search Engine Optimization Hawaii is posting this articles to help you increase your traffic in your website.

Cyber Monday shoppers spent a record $1.3 billion this year as the Monday after Thanksgiving crept up on Black Friday as one of the busiest shopping days of the year. With Christmas just around the corner and so much possible revenue crammed into a short time span, businesses are rushing to capture as many holiday customers as they can.

While sales at brick-and-mortar stores the day after Thanksgiving still dwarf Cyber Monday receipts, a website that is optimized for the search engines will not only drive Internet traffic, but also foot traffic into your physical business by showing potential customers your location and the products and services you provide.

Two webinars scheduled at SEO.com in December will help you start the New Year with a website that could rank on the first page of Google when people search for your industry online. The programs are the final two installments in our Learn to SEO Like a Pro webinar series.

“This webinar series is intended to equip businesses with confidence in their ability to successfully manage SEO campaigns, or at least understand the most important components they are made up of,” said Claye Stokes, director of search engine optimization at SEO.com.

On Dec. 8, our experts will discuss strategies for doubling website traffic in 2012. Using Google Analytics to increase sales will be the topic of the Dec. 22 webinar.

Both webinars are free and you can register today.

Here are some tips from past webinars in the series in case you missed the first three installments:

SEO’s True Value Revealed

The true value of search engine optimization is revealed through demographics research. To really excel, you need to know who looks at your site and why, how they come into your site (home page or a services page), whether they are a repeat customer or not, and whether they respond to any of your calls to action.

Analyzing Demographics

Once you know something about the demographics of visitors to your site, you can then start analyzing each demographic and the return on investment you’re getting from each client. Calculating the cost per lead (CPL) can be just as useful as calculating the ROI. When you know how much you are spending per customer action, you can take steps to reduce that cost and/or increase the volume of customers you attract.

Keyword Research

It is helpful to know what keywords attract given customers. Keyword tracking is not only possible from online leads, but also through phone call tracking, which determines what keyword in an Internet search led a customer to call your phone number.

With data on your target audiences and how they respond to leads, you are finally in a position to audit your search engine marketing efforts. You will want to determine some key performance indicators and use them as a baseline to see how your efforts progress over time. Some particularly useful segments to establish indicators for are new visitors, return visitors, conversions, and non-bounce visits.

Ranking Using Long-Tail Keywords

To rank high on your product or service pages, you need to choose the right keywords. Longer keyword phrases (called long-tail keywords) are much easier to rank for, and they also address specific customer needs better. However, long-tail keywords can be a little unwieldy in headings, so select the most important keywords from the long-tail phrase for your page title and then place the long-tail phrase in the opening paragraph of your page or post.

Present Your Value in Search Results

Make good use of the title tags and meta descriptions that search engines display on their results page. You will typically want it to give your product name followed by your company name. The meta description should include a clear value statement that essentially says, “This product (or service) solves your problem. It will provide you with real value. Click here to find out more about it.”

Convert Leads to Sales on Your Landing Page

When they click on your link you want to provide the product or service information and an easy way to purchase right from the landing page. A best practice is to put a call-to-action box or form in the top-right corner of the screen.

Although your text is primarily there for SEO, you need to make it easy for the viewer to read as well. You can make it scannable by using headers, bullets, white space, and some images. These will break up the flow to make it look more readable and less intimidating.

Get Your Landing Page Shared

Social media marketing is playing an increasingly important role in search engine rankings and product visibility. You need to provide your customers with a means to share your product with their friends. This is best done by providing “share this” buttons to each of the major social media tools available.

In an age when retail stores are gradually being replaced by online sales, these are crucial steps in maintaining your edge in the market.

Client Spotlight: Cleaning company is secret to others' success

It is likely you haven’t considered any behind-the-scenes efforts required to keep a company smooth sailing—which is where a firm like TEAM Solutions enters the picture. TEAM Solutions is an international technical cleaning and facility support service that is designed to optimize other companies’ performance.

TEAM Solutions has specialized in technical cleaning for nearly 30 years. Their facility-cleaning program meets the needs of several industries including aerospace and defense, automotive manufacturing, industrial cleaning, medical industry, food processing and a variety of other support services. Offering all these support services allows businesses to maintain focus on their core business activities.

What sets TEAM Solutions apart from other facility cleaning programs is how they manage their operating system. TEAM Solutions drives operational excellence and ensures key performance at each of their sites.

“We do our job right for our clients to make sure they can focus on what they do best. Their food is safe, the cars look the best, and what we do helps them make everything better,” Rowland said.

Although some may not see any direct impact on their lives from a company like TEAM Solutions, be assured they play an indirect role in public safety. By keeping food processing facilities and the medical industry up to par with sanitation and cleanliness, TEAM Solutions in a way keeps the public in good hands.

“As an industry leader in technical cleaning facility management for a variety of industries, we touch on every aspect of people lives,” said Rowland.

Tips and Tricks: Title tags can be longer than 70 characters

Some may argue that title tags are the most important SEO tags for a website. Although most people are no stranger to the significance of a title tag for search engine optimization, there are those who could benefit from carefully crafting the right tag.

Title tags are a line of text normally found at the top of a browser window. Search engine spiders utilize title tags as a main source for understanding the topic of a page. The spiders crawl the site and determine the relevance between a title tag and the rest of the content. For this reason, using your keywords in the page title can help improve your rankings.

The length of a title tag to be displayed ranges from 60 to 70 characters for most search engines. If you use more than 70 characters, the title will be cut off on the search results page. However, even though search engines display 70 characters of a title tag, that doesn't mean they don't index titles longer than 70 characters. If you feel your unique title is limited, you can use more characters to ensure your critical keywords and phrases are included.

Utilizing title tags often helps generate quick and significant improvements for your search engine rankings. Feel free to push the boundaries of the 70 character “limit” for your title tag in order to provide the information you need for a boost.

TEAM Solutions works for major automotive manufacturers in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia, as well as food processing companies, beverage companies and aerospace and defense contractors. By keeping these facilities clean, each company is capable of operating efficiently.

“It’s all about helping our customers do what they do best in making their products as safe as they can be,” said Tom Rowland, the TEAM Solutions vice president of sales and marketing. “It’s about supporting the client so they can make the best things possible. Just as an example, we support the production of some of the best fighter jets.”

How to Get the Most Value From Your SEO Investment

This article is for everybody but it focuses on the SEO Industry and especially for those who are in the market field. This will help enhance your skills and gain more knowledge about the update in this industry. We hope that SEO Hawaii helps you through this tactics.

Getting the most value from your SEO investment isn't always easy. There are a lot of factors that go into every SEO campaign and it's not always easy to cut something out without negatively affecting something else, or worse, the entire campaign. I addressed some of these issues in my last post linked above, and here I wanted to provide some additional insights on ensuring your SEO investment is a valuable one.

Comparing In-House vs. Outsourced Costs

The number of hours "needed" to optimize your website can fluctuate from one SEO company to the next, as will the hourly rate. Assuming that the cost of a quality SEO team runs $150-200/hour, you can see it's not difficult to reach a monthly investment of $3,000 or more. For a lot of small businesses, this is no small chunk of change. Many small businesses will look at a $36,000 per year investment. At that rate, you could just hire a full-time employee!

While true, you also have to consider other questions as well. The main question is this: Can a single person do everything a team of experts can? Can they efficiently research, write, optimize, link build, implement proper IA to the same degree and hit expected results?

It's rare that you can find one person who is an expert in all these things. Then throw in the education time they'll need to not only become an expert in each of these fields, but to keep up with the latest trends and algorithm changes. You're looking at a lot of education, time and money!

When you outsource you don't have to pay for education time, only hours worked on your site. When you hire in-house, you have to pay for education time, materials, conferences, travel and everything else needed for a quality education. Let's not even get into benefits, holidays and PTO!

Sometimes the hard part for the SEO provider is convincing clients to invest in our time. But this isn't the correct approach. We should be convincing business owners to invest in their website. It's not how much money the client pays for SEO; it's how much return they are getting for the time they are investing into their online marketing strategies.

Cautious Spending in an Uncertain Economy

I'm as cost conscious as the next guy, but there comes a point when pinching pennies is counter productive... especially in business. When I look at various on- and off-line marketing campaigns, I don't look at the cost so much as I look at the overall return on the investment being made (ROI). Sure, a big price tag makes me think long and hard before investing, but what I want to know is, will I get my return on that investment?

The bigger the price tag, the harder it is to jump into an unknown investment. This is just as true with SEO as with any form of marketing, but perhaps even more true with SEO because the return is not instant. SEO requires a long-term commitment before you're going to get the results you want to see.

Making any business succeed requires an investment of both time and money. Consider this:

If you have neither time nor money, there will be no success.

If you have time and not money, success can come, but you may run out of time before it happens.

If you have money but not time, success may come, but it will be fleeting without proper preparation and planning.

If you have both time and money, success may come, but only if you have implemented a strong plan to achieve that success.

Obviously, the best option is to have both time and money and be willing to invest it, if you want your SEO to succeed.

Spend More to Get More

Growing profits means you need to get more conversions (sales, signups, proposals, customers, etc.) for less money. To achieve that often means you have to spend more, not less.

We all know that you have to be willing to spend money to make money. If you've seen the show Shark Tank, you know how much of their own money people often invest to get a business idea off the ground. You gotta risk it for the biscuit!

What you have to think about is whether increased spending will give you an even greater return. Spending less would be nice, but you have to get out of that mindset. Target, Walmart, Pepsi and Coke all continue to spend, spend, spend on their marketing because they know it gets results. And the second they stop spending, they know they lose market share to their competition.

If your online marketing efforts are working they way they should, your marketing budget should always be increasing rather than decreasing - assuming, of course, that you can handle the increased business that the marketing efforts are bringing in.

As a smart, savvy business owner you have to consider all your options. Pricing alone isn't a strong enough indicator on whether you can "afford" a particular company or not. You have to consider what is being offered, the history of success the company has, the communication they provide in meeting your needs and a whole lot more. Just because it's more expensive doesn't mean you can't afford it. You just have to determine if you want some kid to mow your lawn or a gardener to make your whole yard beautiful.
